First you see one runner, then a few seeded runners, then dozens, then hundreds... It's the 101st edition of the San Francisco Bay to Breakers!
Serious international runners, marathoners, moderately serious runners, and well, another 50 or 60 thousand runners/walkers finding the perfect excuse for an early Halloween adult costume party! That's the annual Zazzle Bay to Breakers, a 12-kilometer race across The City's challenging terrain, from the Bay downtown, to the Breakers at Ocean Beach. The winning time this year was 34:40 minutes, run by Sammy Kitwara of Kenya; the best time by a female runner was 39:02 minutes, by Mamita Dasha of Ethiopia. At the other end of the time chart: oh... 3 or 4 hours? But by then, no one was keeping track anyway! Officially, there were 40,000 registered entrants, but as usual, thousands more join the masses in route as they jog over the hills and through Golden Gate Park, heading for the finish line at the ocean. Shot during and after the race, these photographs are my attempt at capturing some of the character of the race. Running in it should be on everyone's bucket list, no matter where you live. I'm proud to say it's been checked off mine.
